“Golden Ring” is a Soviet and Russian pop ensemble created in 1988. It was founded by Alexander Kostyuk, a graduate of the Gnessin Music College, who decided to combine folk music (Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian) and modern instrumentation (synthesizers, electronic drums, electric balalaikas, etc.). Kostyuk invited the best musicians of the Bylina ensemble he led to the Golden Ring. A little earlier Alexander decided on the choice of the soloist: she was Nadezhda Kadysheva, who had previously worked in the Moscow women's ensemble “Rossiyanochka”. Since 1989 the ensemble “Golden Ring” worked in the Smolensk Regional Philharmonic Society. Immediately after the formation of the ensemble Alexander Kostyuk began to work on the search and restoration of folk musical instruments. Now the ensemble “Golden Ring” uses more than seven dozen original instruments in its work. The collective quickly gained wide fame and began extensive touring activities. The ensemble performed in the USA, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and Bolivia. A special place in the tour schedule was occupied by Japan, which the ensemble visited six times (Japanese listeners awarded the ensemble “Golden Ring” with the title of “folk classical”). In 1996 the Golden Ring was transformed into the Theater of Folk Song, and in 2004 it received the building of the movie theater “Estafeta”: after the reconstruction the National Theater of Folk Music and Song “Golden Ring” was located there.
