Pelican is an American post-metal band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 2001. Known for their atmospheric and almost entirely instrumental style. Band lineup: Trevor de Broy (guitar), Loren Lebeck (guitar), Larry Herweg (bass) and his sibling Brian Herweg (drums). The band's lineup has never changed since. From the very beginning, the band's creativity was permeated with the idea of the natural environment, which was reflected in the titles of tracks, albums and the artwork of the booklets. Even choosing the name of the band, the members wanted to convey the essence of their music through the image of a large bird, easily soaring into the sky and soaring over the coastal waters. Initially it was planned to have a vocalist in the band, but since at the first concerts “Pelicans” successfully did without him, they decided to make purely instrumental music. In 2003 the band made a deal with Hydra Head Records, and the record was officially re-released. In 2009 the band moved from Hydra Head Records to Southern Lord Records and debuted at the new place with the EP “Ephemeral”, which Trevor de Brauw presented as an attempt to return to more riff-based music. In 2012, Pelican announced a new EP, Ataraxia/Taraxis. In April 2012, they embarked on a European tour, playing in England, Italy, Germany, Finland, Dunk Festival in Belgium and Roadburn Festival in the Netherlands. In 2019, the band released the album Nighttime Stories.
