John Batiste (real name Jonathan Michael Batiste) is an American musician and composer. He was born on 11 November 1986 in Metairie, Louisiana to a Catholic family with 7 brothers. At the age of 8, John began playing drums in his father's band. On his mother's advice, he switched to playing piano at age 11. At age 17, he released his first album Times in New Orleans. Attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Centre for Creative Arts, graduating in 2004. He received his BFA in 2011 and his MFA in 2013 from The Juilliard School. During his studies, he released his second album, Live in New York: At the Rubin Museum of Art. In 2007, John made his debut at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, where he produced his own show. He has given lessons and masterclasses at various schools in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Batiste has performed and recorded with many famous artists in various genres (Stevie Wonder, Prince, Willie Nelson, Lenny Kravitz, Ed Sheeran). From 2015 to 2022, he appeared with his band Stay Human as bandleader and musical director on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Batiste is also the music director of The Atlantic and creative director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. In 2020, he co-wrote the score for the Pixar animated film Soul, for which he won an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Grammy Award, and BAFTA Film Award.
