Village People is an American disco band. Formed in 1977 by French producers Jacques Morali, Henri Belolo and vocalist Victor Willis.
The band's name refers to the Greenwich Village neighbourhood in Manhattan, New York, known at the time of the band's formation for its art and gay community.
The band's six vocalists represented archetypal images of American masculinity: the cop (Victor Willis), the Indian (Philip Rose), the cowboy (Randy Jones), the construction worker (David Hodo), the biker (Glenn Hughes), and the Marine (Alex Briley).
The group recorded several disco and dance hits, including ‘Y.M.C.A.,’ ‘Go West,’ ‘In the Navy,’ and ‘Macho Man.’
In 2020, the group's audio recordings were added to the National Register of the Library of Congress as an example of culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant works.
