Alphaville is a German synthpop band that was very popular in the mid-1980s. Formed in 1982, its founding members are Marian Gold (real name Hartwig Schierbaum), Bernhard Lloyd (real name Bernhard Goessling) and Frank Mertens (real name Frank Sorgatz). The band gained worldwide fame with three hits, ‘Big In Japan’, ‘Forever Young’ and ‘Sounds Like A Melody’, released in 1984. In 1983, the band took a new name, Alphaville, in honour of the Jean-Luc Godard film of the same name (the film was released in 1965).
