Brainstorm (Latvian: Prāta Vētra) is a Latvian rock band founded in 1989 in Jelgava. It consists of five schoolmates - Renars Kaupers (vocals), Janis Jubalts (guitar), Gundars Maushevics (bass), Kaspars Roga (drums) and Maris Mihelsons (accordion, keyboards). In 1992 the band released their first single "Jo tu nāc". In 1993 the first album "Vairāk nekā skaļi" was released. The most popular song of the album was "Ziema" ("Winter"), for which a video was filmed. On May 13, 2000, the band performed at the 45th Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden with the song "My star", where it took third place. The song became the most popular of all the compositions of the contest, although it did not win the first prize. It was mostly popular in Scandinavia, the Baltic States, Germany and Poland. At night of May 22-23, 2004 in a car crash on the highway between Riga and Jelgava one of the founders of the band, bassist Gundar "Mumins" Maushevics, was killed. In spite of this tragic loss, the other members of the band decided to continue working together. After Mumins' death the role of the bass player in the band was filled by Ingars Vilums, who remained a session musician even after all these years of working together, not being an official member of the band. The collective decision of the band was to continue to exist as a quartet, securing the place for the deceased bassist posthumously.
